Walking routes – Hoge Kempen National Park

Many of the region’s walking routes are within walking distance of Het Veldhuis; the house is almost in their midst. Choose anything from a short, refreshing walk to longer routes for experienced hikers. There is something for everyone, and brochures and maps are available in the accommodation.

Cycling routes – Hoge Kempen National Park

The National Park and its surroundings are wonderful for cycling: shaded forests, views across the heath and peaceful towpaths. Many routes are entirely traffic-free. The flexible junction network is marked by blue signs; you can start at any gateway and bicycles are available for hire in many locations.

Mountain-bike routes – Hoge Kempen National Park

The network offers 400 km of mountain-bike trails across 13 loops, 98% of them unpaved. Routes suit every level and cross forests, heathland and the steep edge between the Meuse valley and Campine plateau, with climbs and descents of up to 45 metres. Experienced riders can tackle the 82 km bike marathon.

Horse-riding routes – Hoge Kempen National Park

The National Park has 140 km of bridle and carriage paths, 85% of which are unpaved. The junction network lets you compose your own route from nearby riding schools. Several excellent stables near Het Veldhuis rent horses and can stable your own horse.

Karting – Horensbergdam

Horensbergdam is a renowned name in motor racing. Champions from Michael Schumacher to Max Verstappen took early steps here. Take the wheel yourself, watch from the front row or attend an international race. Het Veldhuis is just five minutes away by bicycle—perfect for unwinding after a day at the track.

Thor Park – Waterschei – Genk

Thor Park covers 10 km² behind the former Waterschei mine. It combines mine spoil heaps, heathland, pine forest, a stream valley, junipers and inland dunes. Striking buildings such as the former children’s colony and Thor Central add industrial heritage to the landscape.

C-mine – Winterslag – Genk

This creative hub on the former Winterslag mining site blends respect for its industrial past with contemporary art. Explore the underground C-mine expedition, exhibitions, performances and year-round projects. The restored Energy Building is the lively heart of the site and houses the visitor centre.

Cycling through Water – Bokrijk – Genk

Ride for more than 200 metres straight through a pond, from one bank to the other. In the middle, the water reaches eye level on both sides, making this a magical way to see, feel and smell the landscape. The path is also open to walkers and joggers.
